Studio note

Why does everyone hate brutalism?

Brutalism is not ugly. It is honest about the machinery underneath.

People often reject brutalist design because it removes familiar signals of comfort. The grid is exposed, hierarchy becomes confrontational and the interface refuses to pretend it is effortless. That discomfort can be useful—but only when clarity survives the attitude.

The useful question

The point is not to replace one visual rule with another. It is to ask whether the decision still carries meaning after the trend, tool or presentation effect has disappeared.

Design becomes useful when the visible gesture and the system underneath it agree. Taste starts the conversation; consequences decide whether the work lasts.
